Last night Jon Snow lost the Game of
Thrones. He lost I assume not because the White Walkers kidnapped him
so that he might lead them with his Uncle Benjin, not because the
Wildings turned on him after he allowed them through the Wall, not
because his Direwolf ripped him to pieces, no Jon Snow lost the Game
of Thrones because a screenwriter must have though this was a good
idea.
I hate screenwriters. They are pond
scum leeches who turn great books into media mediocrity. Given the
Mona Lisa, they would add a bigger smile. Their mission in life must
be to ruin great books.
I love to read, and reading the Game of
Thrones series this winter was a wonderful thing. I could sit for
hours and lose myself in the lands of Westros, WinterFell or Dorne.
The five book series engulfs you in treachery, incest, betrayal and
love with enough plot twists to keep you on the edge of your seat as
you read page after page.
But last night, a screenwriter decided
that the book wasn't good enough. No he had to change the plot and a
main character to make it better. Mona Lisa.
This is not the first time this has
happened to me and I don't know why I allow it. Last of the Mohicans,
changed the whole story, The Natural, go ahead change the ending,
Ishtar, ok that movie just sucked. I have watched the entire five
seasons of The Game of Thrones and in seasons one and two I was
estatic that the books were being followed almost to the letter.
Season three became my season of discontent and now at the end of
season five the story has nothing to do with the books. Where have
you gone Bran and Ricon Stark?
This seasons cliff hanger left us with
many questions. Do Theon Greyjoy and Sansa Stark survive their leap
off of the great wall of WinterFell? Don't know, not in the book. In
the book Theon leaps with a Sansa Stark imposter. Does Brianne of
Tarth continue her quest to find Sansa Stark after she kills King
Stanis Baratheon? Don't know, in the book Brianne of Tarth never get
her mitts on Stanis. Does Tyrion Lanister find Daenerys Targaryen
after she flies off with her dragon? You tell me, in the book Tyrion
Lanister does not meet Daenerys. Does Princess Marcella die in her
father “The Kingslayers” arms after she admits she knows that she
is not only his daughter but his niece, yes it was a brother –
sister thing. Again, don't know, in the book the Kingslayer never
goes to House Tyrell to rescue her.
For those who have not had the
opportunity to read the books, the series is great. It's classic
watercooler talk television, much like Seinfeld used to be. That's
the problem, Seinfeld was a show about nothing. Last night Game of
Thrones became a show about nothing. They should have had Newman burn
at the stake instead of Stanis Baratheons daughter. She doesn't burn
at the stake in the book. Roose Bolton would have been the perfect
character to “master his own domain.”
But, alas I do have an out. You see
there were only five books! We now enter season six and without a
book to read the story can take on a life of its own. The
screenwriter can do whatever the hell he wants. The story is now his.
So I will make my suggestions to him now. Kill everyone, start fresh
with new and funny characters. I think Jerry, Elaine, George and
Kramer are available.
